The specifications and models of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are mainly divided according to its viscosity, degree of substitution and purity.

The specifications and models of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are mainly divided according to its viscosity, degree of substitution and purity. Viscosity is an indicator of the fluidity of CMC solution at a certain temperature, usually expressed as a viscosity value (mPa·s). The degree of substitution is the degree to which the hydroxyl group in the CMC molecule is replaced by the carboxyl group, usually expressed as a percentage. Purity refers to the content of impurities in CMC, usually expressed as a percentage.

Paper mills should choose appropriate CMC specifications and models according to their own production processes and product quality requirements.

For example, the viscosity of CMC used in pulp preparation should be higher to improve the strength and water retention of the pulp; the degree of substitution of CMC used in sizing should be higher to improve the water resistance and strength of paper; the purity of CMC used in coating should be higher to improve the smoothness and glossiness of the coating.
