A number of countries said on the 16th that the decision of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and non OPEC oil producing countries to significantly reduce oil production at the beginning of this month was due to economic considerations. Saudi Arabia, a major member of OPEC, stressed that it was politically motivated to "completely reject" production cuts.

According to Algerian media reports, Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Alkab and OPEC Secretary General Heissem Geis met on the 16th and both expressed support for the decision to reduce oil production. Alcab said that this was a "historic and very good" decision "to stabilize the market".

Bahrain News Agency quoted Mohammed Ben Mubarak, Bahrain's oil minister, as saying that the decision to reduce production is to stabilize the oil market.

Oman's Ministry of Energy also said that the decision to reduce production was based entirely on economic considerations and was an important and necessary decision.

The Secretary General of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries, Ali Bin Sabat, issued a statement on the 15th, saying that the reduction of oil production was a "correct decision" made at the "right time", with the main purpose of ensuring market stability and balance and making oil prices acceptable to all parties.

The OPEC member countries led by Saudi Arabia and non OPEC oil producing countries such as Russia decided on the 5th of this month to significantly reduce production from November this year, reducing the monthly output by 2 million barrels per day on the basis of August output. This decision triggered dissatisfaction in the United States.

The Wall Street Journal of the United States reported on the 11th that American officials had asked Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries in the Gulf region to postpone the implementation of the oil production reduction plan for one month, but the Saudi side refused.

US President Joseph Biden said on the 11th that Saudi Arabia's approach "will have consequences". Karina Jean Pierre, White House press secretary, also said that Saudi Arabia's move was "undoubtedly in line with Russia".

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the 13th, confirming that the US government had asked Saudi Arabia to postpone the production reduction plan for one month. According to the Wall Street Journal, Saudi Arabia believes that the Biden administration's request for postponing the production cut is due to the fear that oil prices will continue to soar in the critical period before the mid-term elections of the US Congress on November 8, which will severely depress the Democratic Party's support rate.

The statement of the Saudi Foreign Ministry stressed that the decision to reduce production was "purely for economic reasons" and was to maintain the balance between supply and demand in the oil market. Saudi Arabia "completely rejects" the statement that production reduction is politically motivated, pointing out that the decision to reduce production is made by OPEC and non OPEC oil producing countries.

The Cooperation Council of the Arab States of the Gulf also issued a statement on the 13th, supporting the above remarks made by Saudi Arabia.
